Swim Team News Week 6 (June 15-21)

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SWIMMERS OF THE WEEK: Our swimmers of the week are: Alder Robison (7U), Amara Lewis (6U), and Nathan Lyle (Pup).

  • Alder has been working hard these past few weeks and the work paid off, he did amazing at our first meet and Coach Allie cannot wait to see how good he does the rest of the season!
  • Amara is always super kind to her coaches and everyone around her and has made amazing progress in all of her strokes!
  • Nathan did an amazing job this week putting his head in the water while we introduced arms with our freestyle, and tried his hardest with every lap!

Swimmers of the week receive a gift card in recognition for their hard work. Please see coaches to receive your card. Congratulations Alder, Amara, and Nathan!

COACH'S CORNER:

  • Coach Allie: Hello Swampfoxxes, thank you for putting together an amazing meet. I am so proud of our swimmers! We did an amazing job being supportive of each other and I want to continue this energy through the rest of the season. That being said, there was some behavior displayed after the meet that was unacceptable toward the other team. OXH has never and will never be a team that brings other teams down as a way of bringing ourselves up. The coaching staff spoke with the kids involved in this incident and I ask that as parents you help make sure your kids follow these expectations. If I see bad sportsmanship again, consequences will be discussed with the athlete. As we move forward this week, I will be focusing on long and strong strokes. I will be working on rotating in free and back, as well as ensuring all athletes are breathing on their sides. Please reach out with any questions or concerns at [email protected]!
  • Coach Sophia: Hello parents! I am so proud of everyone who swam in the meet, and I am glad to have our first meet done. Thank you to everyone who helped it go smoothly!. This week, we will have our first away meet, so it is extremely important that your swimmers arrive to meet warmups on time so that they can become comfortable with swimming in the new pool. During practices, we will be continuing to work on becoming confident in all three strokes. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns at [email protected]!
  • Coach Lilly: Hi everyone, I was really happy with how much effort the swamp pups put into practices this week, as we introduced arms with our freestyle. This week we are going to continue working on freestyle, but as I mentioned at the beginning of the season, we will also have a day this week to introduce backstroke. We are simply going to try floating on our backs, which is a fundamental part of backstroke, and a skill they will need when going into 6U. If you don't think your pup is ready to introduce floating on their back, you may bring them to the two freestyle practices this week, regardless of their assigned days. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out at [email protected]!
    • Monday: freestyle
    • Wednesday: freestyle
    • Thursday: backstroke

MORNING PRACTICES (9-10a daily) began today, Monday June 15, marking the beginning of traditional calendar schools summer break! We’ll have donuts and juice following practice for all swimmers.

CARY CITY MEET: The 43rd annual Cary City Invitational Meet will be on Saturday, July 11 at Scottish Hills Recreational Club. This major local event brings together multiple swim teams from around our area for a full day of swim fun! This is a great tradition for our Swampfoxxes to participate in. Especially since we have won the coveted Spirit Award Trophy 6 of the last 10 years! The event includes dancing, games, mingling with other teams, and of course, swimming!! The coaches are excited to announce that this year's Cary City theme will be Alice in Wonderland! Learn more about the event, sign your swimmers up ($20 per swimmer, or $10 per 6+ under swimmer), and purchase this year's themed shirt ($15 each), on our website: https://oxxfordhunt.swimtopia.com/cary-city-meet. We’ll have more information about t-shirt and tent decorating soon. Swim fees for Cary City are due by Monday, June 22.

If you are interested in being a volunteer lead for this fun team event, or helping with a component of the event, please reach out to Katie Richards ([email protected]).

AWAY MEET! Our second meet is this Tuesday June 16! We are the away team and will travel to Brookstone. The address is 6651 Lewey Drive, Cary, NC 27519. From NC-55, you can enter on Lewey Drive across from Turner Creek Elementary, and from Jenks-Carpenter, you enter on Fryar Creek Road across from White Oak Creek Park.

Please note: There is ongoing construction in the neighborhood (townhomes and a water line being installed). While there is plenty of street parking and parking in the parking lot, there may be crew/equipment around when we arrive. Please avoid parking in the grassy area to the east of the lot. If you need to park on the street, use the pool side of Lewey Drive or the west side of nearby streets (Milley Brook and Fryar Creek).

The Meet Theme is: Neon Out

  • Arrive at 5:00pm to get settled, swimmers numbered and meet volunteers sign in (even if you are 2nd shift).
  • Brookstone offers pizza, Chick-fil-A sandwiches, and pre-packaged snacks, popsicles, and drinks at concessions. They accept cash and Venmo.
  • Visitors are encouraged to bring folding chairs. We will set up under the two permanent canopies on the east side of the pool (on the right when you come in).
  • Papers called “heat sheets” will be on display on a board at the meet (coaches and several volunteers will also have these to do their jobs, like kid pushers, clerk of course, etc), showing the lane and heat that each swimmer will be in. Please check relays in addition to individual events. Swimmers might swim in a relay of an older age group when there are not enough swimmers in that age group to make a team of 4.
  • If your swimmer’s status has changed (especially if they planned to swim and no longer can), please let us know ASAP. Coach Allie ([email protected]) and Coach Sophia ([email protected]) need to adjust the heat sheets and having as much time as possible to do that is very helpful. You can copy the board ([email protected]) so that we can try to get heat sheets updated before they are printed. We understand kids can get sick at any point and sometimes meets can be overwhelming, so please just communicate with a coach if you need to leave, or your swimmer can no longer participate in event(s) planned.

MEET VOLUNTEERS: We ask that if you have a swimmer competing, at least one parent plans to volunteer at each swim meet. We want all families to do their part to help. There are a few jobs still open (timer and meet admin) for this Tuesday's meet- if you have a swimmer competing, please sign up for a volunteer position. Contact Katie Richards ([email protected]) if you need to change your volunteer position or have any questions. During meets, please check in for your job with Katie before the meet begins, even if you are working a 2nd shift job. We need to ensure there is coverage for all positions at the start of the meet.

MARK SWIMMER AVAILABILITY: It is important for all swimmers to declare their attendance (select meet entry for each meet online) for meets. This should always be done at least one week prior to a meet so the coaches can properly plan the heat sheets and minimize changes. The next meet is a week from Tuesday, so please mark your swimmer for the meet by this Tuesday. Attendance will close on Friday 6/20 for the meet Tuesday 6/24.

SWIM CLINICS: The coaches are hosting 2 more Saturday morning (9-10a) swim clinics. Swim clinics provide extra practice on Saturday mornings, where coaches dedicate an entire hour working on a specific skill. Clinics cost $10/swimmer and are cash only. Exact change is appreciated! Please RSVP on Swimtopia so we know how many coaches are needed.

  • Saturday June 20: Butterfly
  • Saturday June 27: Breaststroke

SOCIAL EVENTS:

  • Save the date for popsicles after both evening practices on Monday 6/15 and Wednesday 6/24! These dates were specifically chosen to ensure all pups have an opportunity to enjoy a sweet treat with teammates at the pool. Look for parent volunteers at the pavilion at the end of practice.
  • Save the date and sign up for shifts and donations for our July 4th pool party on the 4th from 12-3p (flyer attached).
  • Several older swimmers enjoyed an indoor Fun Friday with the coaches and they are getting pumped up about the Cary City theme, Alice in Wonderland!
