Week 6 News (June 16-22)

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SWIMMERS OF THE WEEK: Our swimmers of the week are: Mathias Ursut (7U), Logan Klocke (6U), and Everett Saboe (Pup). Mathias stepped up this week and worked really hard on improving his butterfly! Logan always shows up to practice ready to swim and listens to directions! Everett shows up to practice ready to swim and he spends time practicing, even when we don’t have lessons! Swimmers of the week receive a gift card in recognition for their hard work. Congratulations Mathias, Logan, and Everett.

COACH'S CORNER:

  • Coach Allie: Hello everyone, we had another great week in the water! Our first win is in the books and I am so happy with how the meet went on Tuesday, thank you to all my parents who helped make that happen. I took some things from the meet that I felt we needed to improve upon and worked on them throughout the rest of the week. I will continue to do that before our next meet on Tuesday and I look forward to another great week in the water. I also want to give a shoutout to all our 7U swimmers that broke records, congratulations to Adam Movchan, Lee Lowther and Taylor Weiner!
  • Coach Sophia: Hello parents! As some of you have heard, I will be out of the country from June 13-23. Coach Ammie will be leading practices in my absence. The swimmers will be continuing to work on becoming confident in all three strokes. I will still be the person in charge of creating heat sheets for the meet so reach out to me with any information regarding changes. I am so proud of all the swimmers who participated in our first swim meet of the season and I want to give a special shout out to Teddy Schmidt and Maggie Lowther who both broke the 6U backstroke team record! Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns at [email protected]
  • Coach Lilly: Hi everyone! I’m so proud of how much effort our Swamp Pups put into practice this week as we started to use kickboards! Unfortunately this upcoming week, a few coaches, including myself, will be out of town so we will not be having Swamp Pup practices; the following week though, we will continue practicing freestyle and getting comfortable in the water. If anyone is at the pool this week, I encourage swimmers to practice putting their heads under water to help them build confidence while swimming! As always, if anyone has any questions or concerns, I am happy to help at [email protected]!

MEET RESULTS AND RECORDS: You can find the meet results in the Swimtopia app, and a PDF report is also available on our website, under past events.

6U Maggie Lowther 14.10 backstroke beat the 2015 record of Mary Szymeczek (14.82)

11-12 Adam Movchan 27.98 freestyle beat the 2014 record of Ross Bowen (28.73)

9-10 Lee Lowther 17.00 backstroke beat the 2007 record of Connor McNamara-Spackman (17.72)

11-12 Taylor Weiner 30.21 backstroke beat the 2013 record of Grace Bowen (32.62)

9-10 Lee Lowther 18.84 breaststroke beat the 2015 record of Matthew Dodson (19.27)

PLEASE CHECK THE TEAM COMMUNICATIONS BOX: Ribbons from swim meets are all in the black Team Communications Box. The Box lives in the Swamp Shack and can sometimes be found on the pool deck during practices. Parents should try to check the box at least once a week during the swim season. Thank you!

AWAY MEET: Our second meet is this Tuesday June 17! We are the away team and will travel to Weldon Ridge. Address is: 701 Wellbrook Station Road, Cary. (Google Maps Link) Directions can be found at www.wrswimteam.com.

Please, absolutely no permanent markers on swimmers other than swimmer numbers or events on arms, as they can transfer onto our fabric chairs. If we see swimmers with markers on their backs or legs, we will ask them to remove it or stay off the furniture at all times.

The Meet Theme is: Neon Out

  • Arrive at 5:00pm to get settled, swimmers numbered and meet volunteers sign in (even if you are 2nd shift). Warm ups start at 5:30p.
  • Weldon Ridge offers concessions where swimmers and families can purchase pizza, Chick-fil-A sandwiches, and pre-packaged snacks, popsicles, and drinks. We accept cash, Venmo, and PayPal.
  • Please consider carpooling to Weldon Ridge. If the lot is full, you can use Wellbrook Station Rd for street parking. Additionally, Ivyshaw Rd and Trentview Rd are available for secondary overflow parking; you can use the Greenway to walk to the pool. Please make sure to park on only one side of the street (opposite the sidewalk) to allow room for emergency vehicle access.
  • Facility: Visitors are encouraged to bring folding chairs, we can set up under the large Funbrellas nearest the clubhouse. Spectators are also welcome to use the clubhouse deck overlooking the pool, as well as the tables along the rock wall to the left of the shallow end towards the umbrellas. From the pool entrance, everything on the left side is designated for the visiting team.
  • Heat sheets will be on display on a board at the meet (coaches and several volunteers will also have these to do their jobs, like kid pushers, clerk of course, etc), showing the lane and heat that each swimmer will be in. Please check relays in addition to individual events. Swimmers might swim in a relay of an older age group when there are not enough swimmers in that age group to make a team of 4.
  • If your swimmer’s status has changed (especially if they planned to swim and no longer can), please let us know ASAP. Coach Allie ([email protected]) and Coach Sophia ([email protected]) need to adjust the heat sheets and having as much time as possible to do that is very helpful. You can copy the board ([email protected]) so that we can try to get heat sheets updated before they are printed. We understand kids can get sick at any point and sometimes meets can be overwhelming, so please just communicate with a coach if you need to leave, or your swimmer can no longer participate in event(s) planned.

MEET VOLUNTEERS: We ask that if you have a swimmer competing, at least one parent plans to volunteer at each swim meet. We want all families to do their part to help. There are a few jobs still open for this Tuesday's meet including kid pusher, lane time, and order of finish judge (all for 2nd shift). If you have a swimmer competing, please sign up for a volunteer position. Contact Katie Richards ([email protected]) if you need to change your volunteer position or have any questions. During meets, please check in for your job with Katie before the meet begins, even if you are working a 2nd shift job. We need to ensure there is coverage for all positions at the start of the meet.

MARK SWIMMER AVAILABILITY: It is important for all swimmers to declare their attendance (select meet entry for each meet online) for meets. This should always be done at least one week prior to a meet so the coaches can properly plan the heat sheets and minimize changes. The next meet is a week from Tuesday, so please mark your swimmer for the meet by this Tuesday. Attendance will close on Friday 6/20 for the meet Tuesday 6/24.

TEAM MOVIE NIGHT AT THE POOL: We are requesting your input via a brief survey to help us determine if it is worth it to try and schedule a movie night at the pool! Just 4 questions! Survey closes at 3p Tuesday 6/18. https://forms.gle/SPpiVgWqLCtKDygK7

There are licensing costs to show a movie and we are gauging interest for this season, but also to see if it is worth it to get a license for more movies (it is more cost-effective to host multiple movies than just to have one). Please help us understand what the swim families in our neighborhood would be interested in.

TEAM GEAR: Our 2025 swim team shirts are IN!! Every swimmer (including pups) gets one free with registration! If you missed the poolside distribution, see Sally Nicol or Katie Herndon. Extra 2025 shirts in adult sizes are available for sale for only $20! Swim caps are also available as needed. If your swimmer still has a swim cap from last year, please consider having them use it again to help us conserve our stock. We are happy to replace their cap if it breaks. There is also an exchange box/tub available at practices for families to donate suits and/or swim team apparel that no longer fits. Families are welcome to take any items that might fit their child.

OTHER TEAM MERCH FOR SALE: We’re having a BIG SUMMER BLOWOUT SALE on our 2024 red lightweight performance tee shirts for only $10, and our dark gray 2023 cotton tee for only $5!! See Katie Herndon or Sally Nicol for size options and payment. Customized Swampfoxx swag is also available for direct order and shipping at SwimOutlet.
