Week 5 Swim Team Updates

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SWIMMERS OF THE WEEK:

Our swimmers of the week are Emma Richards and Johnathan Herndon! Congratulations to these swimmers for going the extra mile at practice, and pushing their teammates to join them!!

COACH'S CORNER:

  • Coach Hope: Hello parents! This has been another great week! Time trials exceeded my expectations, which is great. That being said, we are now moving into the regular meets of the season. We encourage good sportsmanship and team spirit in practice as well as when we are competing. This coming week we will continue polishing up stroke techniques and start techniques early in the week, and working on improving endurance later in the week. Thank you for another great week!
  • Coach Sophia: Hello everyone! This past week was really good and I was very impressed with how well the kids did at time trials. This next week starts actual meets and I encourage you to sign your kids up to participate in events (6/20 meet entry closes 6/16). This next week I will be out of town from Wednesday up until the following Tuesday morning. We have a lot of coaches that are out of town this week so we will have to cancel the swamp pup practices on the 14th and the 19th. I plan to try and make up for these missed practices when I get back. I will have the coaches continue to work on all three strokes with the kids to make sure they are prepared for meets. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns!

MEET THEME: The meet theme for this week is Tropical!! Please wear your most tropical outfit as we kick off our dual meets this season!

FIRST SWIM MEET (AWAY): Is this Tuesday June 13 at LifeTime Cary

(Address: 1700 Regency Pkwy, Cary, NC 27518)

  • Arrive by 5:15pm (maybe earlier to sign waivers - see below), warmups begin at 5:30p and the meet starts at 6p.
  • The club runs a snack bar where they have healthy food - sandwiches, wraps, chicken strips, smoothies, veggie chips, pizzas, drinks, etc. Your swimmers can bring a small soft cooler with drink/snacks. No hard coolers or large coolers should be brought in to the pool area. Also, there is no glass allowed on the pool deck.
  • Parking is available at the gym. Overflow parking behind the gym.
  • Come in the front door, you will need to walk through the family locker room to enter the outdoor pool.
  • Check in at the front desk - waivers will need to be signed.
  • Please check with coaches before you leave the meet! Sometimes we need help with relays and need swimmers to fill spots. Verify with the coach before you leave so you can confirm they don’t need relay swimmers.
  • Lifetime Fitness does not have lights and cannot run swim meets past dusk. As we experienced last year, races will run fairly quickly and there will likely be limited heats. It’s important that swimmers be ready when it’s their turn to swim or the race may go without them (see next item).
  • If you have a 7-8 or 9-10 swimmer, please be sure they check in with the kid pusher for their races when the 15-18 boys are about to race. We have a lot of 7-10 year olds this year, and it was sometimes difficult to track them down during time trials. It will help everyone if swimmers pay attention to when it is time for their races (and parents are also attentive to these younger aged swimmers if they are not volunteering).

MEET VOLUNTEERS: We ask that one parent plan to volunteer at each home swim meet. We want all families to do their part to help. There is a wide variety of jobs to fit the needs of most families. The job sign up page is on the Swimtopia website: https://oxxfordhunt.swimtopia.com/swim_meets. Contact Diane Johnson ([email protected]) if you need to make changes to your job.

MARK SWIMMER AVAILABILITY: It is important for all swimmers to be declared the attendance for meets. This should always be done at least one week prior to a meet so the coaches can properly plan the heat sheets and minimize changes. Please mark your swimmer for next week’s meet (6/20) by Tuesday 6/13. On Tuesday 6/13, registration will also open for the 6/27 meet (opens 2 weeks in advance). Attendance will close on Friday 6/16 for the 6/20 meet and on Friday 6/23 for the 6/27 meet.

MORNING PRACTICES (9-10a daily) begin tomorrow, Monday June 12, marking the beginning of traditional calendar schools summer break!

ICE CREAM SOCIAL: We’ll be serving up free ice cream this Wednesday 6/14, following both evening practices. Come on down and join us for a sweet treat (including pups even though your practice is canceled)!

VEHICLE REMINDER: The Pool Committee has noticed an uptick in the number of cars speeding down Fallsworth to drop off & pick up kids at the pool. As always during this time of the year we're worried about the potential for accidents, especially with lots of adults and children walking and biking in the area in the afternoons. Parents, please remember to pay attention to the speed limit in the neighborhood and be especially mindful of driving around the pool

TIME TRIALS RESULTS: The results of the Timed Trials are available in SwimTopia and the SwimTopia mobile app for those who use it! We look forward to swimmers achieving personal best times throughout the year!
