Week 4 Updates: Lots of Info!

COACHES CORNER AND SWIMMER OF THE WEEK:

  • From Coach Hope and Coach Mary: We have the first meet of the season on Tuesday!! This is the first meet in a long time where there will be two teams on deck. In addition to fast swimming, we need to remember to show good sportsmanship and be respectful.
  • Coach Hope: Hello everyone!! This past week we completed time trials! Everyone did so well, and I am so excited with the baseline we have created. Following time trials, we continued to work on breaststroke and butterfly, because those two strokes had the most disqualifications. We are making great progress, and I am confident there will be more legal swimming this Tuesday!! Saturday morning, we hosted our first clinic of the season. It was quite successful, and I believe the swimmers learned a lot. We have two more clinics this season, so if you’re interested in those, be on the lookout for the signup on the calendar. Thank you all again for another great week! I will see you all next week!!
  • Coach Mary: Hi 6&U Parents! Everyone did so good this past week at time trials and I’m so proud!! We continued to work on breaststroke, with some backstroke after time trials. Breaststroke is a more challenging stroke for our 6&U. While we have a few that are legal, it might take a bit more time/practice for it to click for others. Patience is key with this part!! Unfortunately not everyone may be legal for the meet but that’s ok. It is only our first meet and there will be plenty of time for everyone to practice and improve. I was thrilled at how many friends came to continue practicing their breaststroke at our first swim clinic of the season! Quick reminder - our first morning practice is tomorrow (Mon. 06/13) at 9:00. I look forward to seeing everyone this week!!
  • Swimmers of the week: Anna Walker and Eli Findley for going the extra mile working on each of their strokes this week!
  • Meet Theme: For each meet we plan to have a theme to dress up for and make the meet even more fun! First home swim meet is: Western!

PASTA PARTY! Our team pasta party will take place the evening before our first swim meet (Monday, June 13 from 5:30-7:30p) at the Clubhouse. Please sign up to bring food and/or help set up, with shifts, or clean up.

FIRST HOME SWIM MEET: Is this Tuesday June 14! Here are a few important details about rules and how we run meets with another team:

  • The pool closes to residents at 4:30pm
  • Arrive at 4:45pm to get settled and numbered
  • For all home meets the Oxxford Hunt side of the pool deck is to the left as you enter along Lane 1 and the shallow end. All space and chairs on the right hand side of the pool is reserved for the visiting team, so you may want to bring your own chairs. Please have all swimmers remain on our designated side of the deck.
  • No swimmers in the water before or after warmups - this includes the shallow end. No swimmers in the pool at the conclusion of the meet as well. Please refrain from swimmers throwing water out of the pool onto the deck with their swim caps.
  • Warmups will begin at 5:00pm sharp. Visiting team will warm up at 5:30pm.
  • Meet will start no later than 6p
  • Swimmers should wear their team suit, swim cap, and goggles.
  • Swamp Shack - will be serving food and snacks.
  • Parking with another team can be very busy. Please walk if you can so we can accommodate our guests.

MEET VOLUNTEERS: We ask that one parent plan to volunteer at each home swim meet. We still have several jobs that need parent volunteers on Tuesday. The job sign up page is on the Swimtopia website: https://oxxfordhunt.swimtopia.com/swim_meets. Contact Diane Johnson ([email protected]) if you need to make changes to your job.

MORNING PRACTICES (9-10a daily) begin tomorrow, Monday June 13, marking the beginning of traditional calendar schools summer break!

STICKERS! Looking for something to 'jazz up' your water bottle, laptop case, school notebooks, or anything else? Look no further! New this year to our merch options is a hydro-flask sticker that can go anywhere - and for just $2 you can 'Foxx-ify' almost anything! Buy online (https://oxxford-hunt-swim-team.square.site) or in person at Tuesday's meet!

FUN FRIDAY WITH KATIE ZAFERES: This Friday 6/17, we’re doing something a little different at practice. Oxxford Hunt’s very own Katie Zaferes, bronze medal winner in the women’s triathlon at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, will be joining us on deck to show us her silver and bronze medals, chat with the team, and stay for a Q&A session. Bring your curiosity and questions to ask our neighbor!

TIME TRIALS RESULTS: The PDF results of the Timed Trials are attached and available on the past event page of the website. These results are also now available in SwimTopia and the SwimTopia mobile app for those who use it! Moving forward, the volunteers that help manage the new timing system for our meets will do their best to get these results populated the day after the meets, as we know everyone will want to see times as soon as possible. If there will be known delays in this timeframe, we'll try to get a note out to everyone as quickly as we can. A few notes as you review these results from earlier this week:

  • Both our timing and Meet Management systems are new this year. As a result, there were some great learnings and solutions that were figured out on Tuesday night! We are confident moving forward that the technical issues we experienced can be resolved and smoothed out for our first meet this week.
  • With that disclaimer, there was one heat (Boys 7-8 breaststroke, heat 2) that did not get times recorded on Tuesday. We know what happened and have made the necessary adjustments to avoid a repeat on this.
  • There were a few other (3-4) instances where individual lane times did not get recorded properly. We apologize to those swimmers who might have received NTs for their times on Tuesday. But again, this was a learning experience and we're confident these issues can also be easily rectified moving forward.
  • As you are reviewing times, please keep in mind that Place Judges officially decide places during the meets. There may be small discrepancies between times and places in close races (for example, the second fastest time by a couple tenths of a second may actually be awarded third place). This happens, as timing for each lane is manual. During meets, the Place Judges from each team will work together and determine the proper award of places and points!
  • On the topic of points, only the first heat was included in placing for time trials.
  • Overall, this event was a huge success in helping to get our swimmers, coaches and volunteers all ready for the upcoming meets! If you have questions about any specific results, please shoot Jon Weiner ([email protected]) a note and he'll do his best to help you find an answer.
